Classes and Descriptions

TexARTS' Academy faculty includes veterans from Broadway, National Tours, TV and Film as well as Austin's best and brightest professionals.

Classes: From visual art and drama classes for our youngsters to adult dance and production classes, TexARTS provides opportunities for people of all ages to immerse themselves in the arts. The instruction TexARTS provides in Ballet, Jazz/Musical Theatre, Tap, Hip-Hop etc. improves technique and instills confidence in our young professionals.

Student Performance: From weekly showcases during our Summer camps to full-scale musicals for youth and professionals, we provide an array of performance opportunities for our students.

Creative Movement (Ages 2-5 years)
Creative Movement classes focus on basic motor, listening and social skills through music, dance, imagery, storytelling and games. Fun exercises will introduce the fundamentals of dance steps, terminology and the structure of dance class. Instructors adapt to meet dancers’ developmental needs.

Ballet/Tap (Ages 3-6 years)
Ballet/Tap is an introductory dance class focused on the basic concepts of ballet and tap dancing. Students will learn dance steps and terminology through imagery and exercises that enhance cognitive skills, social development and prepare them for further dance training.

Broadway Kids (Ages 3-6 years)
Broadway Kids is a creative movement class with an emphasis on Musical Theatre. Dancers will be introduced to pre-jazz dance technique and Broadway dance stylization. Dancers will study songs, choreography and the history of various musicals throughout the year

Pre-Ballet (Ages 5-6 years)
Pre-Ballet classes are designed to build a foundation for movement, personal expression, musicality and an understanding of basic ballet principles and terminology through imagery and exercises that promote creativity.

Ballet (Ages 7+ years)
The study of classical ballet technique provides the foundation for a dance education. Exercises at the barre and center improve coordination, flexibility, strength and musicality. Advanced students begin pre-pointe and/or pointe training in order to strengthen feet and ankles.

Jazz/Musical Theatre (Ages 7+ years)
Jazz is an upbeat, high-energy contemporary dance class. Dancers improve strength, balance and control and will build technical and expressive abilities with an emphasis on phrasing and coordination.

Tap (Ages 7+ years)
Tap is a comprehensive study of American tap dance, including terminology and technique. Emphasis is placed on precession in sound, rhythm, movement, gesture and expression.

Hip Hop (Ages 7+ years)
Hip Hop is a fun, high-energy street dance class. Class includes a warm-up/ conditioning exercise and exercises across the floor which progress to combinations utilizing the latest moves in funk and hip hop styles to develop the expressive abilities of the dancers.

Modern (Ages 10+ years)
This class is an introduction to Lester Horton and Martha Graham techniques.

Contemporary (Ages 10+ years)
Contemporary dance is a compilation of different styles of dance, including lyrical, classical ballet, jazz, hip hop and modern dance. It continuously strives to creative new ways to express emotions and tell stories through movement.

Turns and Leaps (Ages 10+ years)
This class focuses strictly on the different types of jumps and turns.

Stretch & Strength (Ages 10+ years)
Stretch and strength classes develop dancers’ flexibility and strength. The class will focus on elongating and strengthening muscles to give dancers more power and strength when dancing.

Acting for Stage (Ages 7+ years)
Acting for Stage explores theater games, the fundamentals of acting and tools for acting on stage. Students will study scenes, monologues, audition technique and improvisation. Acting for Stage is a fun way for students to build confidence and become comfortable on stage.

Acting for TV & Film (ages 6+ years)
Students will study the fundamentals of film acting, perfect their slate, break down auditions, create and understand opening beats and beat changes. Cold reading and scene work will also be introduced. Students will develop self-esteem, become confident speakers and improve communication skills.

Voice (Ages 7+ years)
Voice classes are designed for students who enjoy singing and wish to improve their vocal technique. Breathing, support, phrasing, diction, intonation and tone quality will be discussed in various styles such as Musical Theater, Pop and Rock. Students will select, research and perform appropriate repertoire.

Visual Art (Ages 5+ years)
Students will acquire the visual perception of an artist by drawing and painting in our exciting art classes. The individual style of each student grows as they explore art history and a variety of medias, artistic styles and techniques.

Broadway Company & Broadway Company II
Broadway Company and Broadway Company II are pre-professional musical theatre programs. Broadway Company is for committed students who are considering a collegiate program or future in musical theatre. Students study dance, voice and acting technique, and select and rehearse songs, monologues, and other appropriate audition material. The Broadway Company performs in special productions and represents TexARTS at public performances around the community. Admission to Broadway Company and Broadway Company II is by audition and invitation only.

Musical Theatre Academy or MTA (Ages 7+ years)
Saturday Musical Theatre Academy is a performance-oriented workshop. Students meet weekly and learn dance choreography, study voice and acting, and learn a repertoire leading up to a pre-professional performance. TexARTS suggests that technique classes are taken in addition to MTA. Fall MTA Session runs September-January. Spring MTA Session runs February-May.

Youth Ballet Theatre (Ages 7+ years)
Saturday Youth Ballet Theatre is a performance-oriented workshop. Students meet weekly and learn Ballet choreography leading up to a pre-professional performance. TexARTS suggests that technique classes are taken in addition to Youth Ballet Theatre. Fall Production of The Nutcracker rehearses September-December. Spring Production TBD rehearses January-April.
